Women’s Heart Health

What are the symptoms of a women’s heart attack?

February is heart health wellness month. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. For a long time, heart disease studies focused on male patients while women were widely viewed as though they were smaller versions of men. However, the symptoms of heart disease can be different in women and men, and are often misunderstood. The most common heart attack symptom in women is some type of pain, pressure, or discomfort in the chest, but it may not always be severe or shown symptoms of chest pain. Women are more likely than men to have heart attach symptoms unrelated to chest pain such as neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, abdominal discomfort, shortness of breath, right arm pain, nausea, stomach pain, sweating, lightheadedness, dizziness, and unusual fatigue. Women’s symptoms may occur often when they are resting or sleeping. Women tend to show up in emergency rooms after heart damage has already occurred because their symptoms are not those typically associated with heart attacks, and because the symptoms are often downplayed. If you experience these symptoms or think that you are having a heart attack call for emergency medical help immediately.
